My Journey

I started to dream big when I was 9 years old and I figured I'd be a
pediatrician-a doctor who gives candies to kids after their routine check-up,
based on what I've read from those childhood books.
Come high school senior year, I was having second thoughts about pursuing
the medical career due to financial reason as to my main concern became working
abroad the soonest possible to help pay for the expenses in my family.
Then, much to my mother's chagrin as she wanted me to become a nurse, I
became an occupational therapist- a career that is both fulfilling emotionally
and monetarily. I worked hard doing what I do best- dealing, handling and
teaching children. It is what makes me happy, it is what gives me fulfillment,
and it is what I thought I finally and really want.
But I cannot stay stuck here, the journey has to go on. This is what I want
and this is what I believe in to and I would like to share it with you.

Therapeutic Toys

Do you know that toys are not only used to play for enjoyment and group
interaction alone, but now, they can be used as therapy tools to teach, and
educate children.

In a therapeutic setting, therapists uses toys as instruments to target and
improve behaviors like attention span, concentration, sitting span, frustration
tolerance, and impulse control by expertly adjusting and manipulating the toys
and the situation to suit the needs of the child to be able to handle the
situation and thereby improve and pratice his skills.

What therapy toys to improve your child's work behaviours?

Your Worries Are Over Now

Do you get frustrated especially during therapy session all because you are
limited by the materials, resources and toys you are using?
You know what to do, what skills to target, and what problems to prioritize but
you don't have any idea where you can get such material or toy you have in mind.
Do you get discouraged from buying the toys you see in stores because they are
way out of your budget or your clinic's budget, although you really need them?
Why not get a similar toy with a similar concept, with the same skills to target
and best of all with a cheaper tag as compared to those branded ones. Where to
find those toys, check out this link http://sulit.com.ph/1921215
The therapy toys were carefully chosen by an expert Occupational Therapist who
knows her therapy toys bearing in mind those key areas which frequently needed
to improve upon- sensory integration, fine motor skills, handwriting, social
interaction, cognitive skills, pre-vocational skills.

Understanding My Child

How can I talk to my child? How can I make him express his needs and wants? I
cannot understand my child when he talks. When my child gets frustrated, he
throws tantrums, hurts himself or others or throws his toys away. How can I
make my child follow me without me shouting at him or spanking him.

Before we get angry or go out of control because of our inability to communicate
with our children or students, you should first learn the factors that comprise
Understanding.

Affinity is the degree of liking or attraction towards another person. You can
say that you have a big affinity towards your loved ones, your friends, your
pets, your favorites, while you have a small affinity towards your enemies, and
stressful, worrisome, inconvenient, and delayed situations.

Reality is what you and other people agree upon. Reality is what is real for
both of you and you agree on it. If both of you saw a black cat, you can both
agree that it is black and it is a cat. But if one of you said that instead of
a black cat, you saw a white dog then it would be a big lie and it would destroy
the reality you agreed upon.

Communication is the universal solvent as it is the solution to all our
problems, conflicts and misunderstandings. You can communicate effectively and
with understanding if you can increase the other 2 components- Affinity and
Reality. If you want to increase the other 2 components, you can do that by
increasing one of the components.

So the way to understanding your child is to increase your like and love for him
or her even though he/she is a tyrant with an angel's face. Find out his
reality-what he likes to do, what he likes to play with, or talk about and agree
with that, even though it is hard for you to comprehend his reality. All you
can do is accept his reality, as he/she is. Through his reality, find a way to
communicate with him. It may be through a look, a hug, a kiss, gestures,
movements, words, or sounds. When you communicate, remember that it is two way
communication. You give your message, he replies or answers back, and gives his
communication back to you and you answer back. It may be hard at the start, but
it's a first.

Recipe for a Successful Therapy

I'm sure most of you encountered the usual questions of "what should I do with
my child?", "How will I handle him or her?", "These are his behaviors at home
and in school, and people around him are already complaining, and I don't know
what to do anymore?"

Parents, relatives and caregivers come to you to address their child's needs,
issues and concerns. Aside from the education, therapy, and support you are
already providing then, you still want to give them more and beyond your
capability.

It is a known fact that adults play a major role in the growing years of kids
and since play is the main occupation of kids, so a good supervision and
handling of an adult + the necessary toy to target specific needs + child = a
recipe for a successful therapy. When you provide them the toys, you gave them a
chance for them to bond together, work together, play together, learn and
discover new things together, and that is what the kids really need- the love,
attention, and care of their family.

Playing with the right kind of toy can create a long lasting influence to your child

Is it possible to have fun and learning at the same time? Is it also possible
to have quality fun and affordable price? Are you tired of buying toys that
after children played with them, they ended up on the shelf and have no
educational value afterwards? Do you have unmotivated kids? How can you
motivate them to continue learning?

Playing with toys and puzzles is one of the most attractive things about
childhood. Every child loves to play and solve puzzles to have fun. Recent
studies have shown that playing with toys is critical to the healthy development
of the child's mind and intelligence.

Playing with the right kind of games and toys has a long lasting influence on
what your child becomes after growing up. Educational toys are equipped to make
the learning process fun for children. They have the potential to teach children
through innovative means and techniques by the way of interesting activities.

Cognitive development refers to the overall development of the child's thought
process. Educational toys allow the children to develop their thinking
capabilities and at the same time, think freely by unleashing their true
potential. However different set of toys are designed for children of different
ages. Those toys should be selected which are appropriate for your child's
cognitive needs at a certain age.

The toys address various issues ranging from numerical puzzles to making
strategies. With the development of cognitive ability of the child, he is able
to enter areas of deeper and complex intellectual challenges which stimulate the
growth of his creativity and innovativeness. Motor Development refers to the
growth of a child's physical abilities.

Motor development goes hand-in-hand with the cognitive development. It is
essential to make sure that your child learns the art of performing physical
activities simultaneously with his intellectual growth.

Childhood is characterized by fun and enjoyment. Until and unless work is mixed
with play, a child's interest cannot be gained. The sense of curiosity and
self-interest stimulates a child's attraction to a certain toy or game. Without
the element of fun, the child may not be able to hold hid interest in the game
for too long.
